The Best Place for a Western Haircut in Chiang Mai

The Best Place for a Western Haircut in Chiang Mai

I spent a long time looking for a Western haircut in Chiang Mai. I actually only dared to have a haircut twice whilst I was there. This was partly due to a deep-set fear of hairdressers from my past (why do they never listen to what you want?) and also my understanding of the differences between Western and Asian hair – which is HUGE. Eventually, I did find the perfect salon, and I wish that I had found it sooner!

Western vs. Asian Hair

For those of you that don’t know: our Western hair is fine, dry and weak compared to the thick, oily, luscious hair of the Asians. They don’t necessarily need to use conditioner on their hair due the natural oils, whereas if I don’t use conditioner there is absolutely no chance that I will be able to get a hairbrush through it. So naturally, I was terrified of going to a Thai hairdresser and thought for a long time about where to find a place that could do a Western haircut in Chiang Mai.

Initial Disaster when trying to find a Western Haircut in Chiang Mai

The first time I went to a salon in CentralFestival mall, thinking that as the mall was very Westernised, that they would have a large Western clientele. I was wrong, and they didn’t use conditioner, tried to cut me into a pixie style, and razored my hair after I had been growing it bluntly for over a year. Massive disaster, so don’t go there.

Success on Finding a Western Haircut in Chiang Mai

A Successful Haircut!

A Successful Haircut!

Fortunately, my second haircut in Chiang Mai was the complete opposite of my first disaster! On the recommendation of a friend, I took a trip to Newyork Newyork Hair Studio on Soi 13, off the popular and trendy Nimmanhaemin Road. They use Aveda products, and all know exactly how to treat Western hair. I felt like I was in a salon back home as I was having my hair washed with beautifully scented products, surrounded by hair stylists with totally fantastic and creative hairstyles. My hair was cut efficiently and perfectly, and then blow-dried straight. To make the whole experience better, it came to a total of around 500 baht (about $15), which is music to the ears of any Westerner who is used to paying upwards of $45 for a haircut!

What services do Newyork Newyork Offer?

Not only does the studio offer haircuts, but they also do styling, highlights, perms, and treatments. On top of this, they are also a beauty salon, so you can have waxing done, or get your make-up and nails done whilst they do your hair!

All in all, the experience was amazing, and I only wish that I had found them when I first moved to Chiang Mai. If you are looking for somewhere to get a Farang, white person, or western haircut in Chiang Mai, then look no further than NewYork NewYork Hair Studio, I highly recommend them!

The studio can be found on Facebook and Instagram, or can be contacted at toomvara@hotmail.com – enjoy!

  1. A very poor haircut. Almost nothing done at all and a hearty price tab. A friend said it looked as if someone had thrown a wig on my head!

    • Hi Stevie, sorry to hear that! I had a great experience there when I went, although I didn’t have anything major done. It was certainly better than my trip to the hairdressers in Central who razored my fine hair, cut it into layers when I had blunt hair, and nearly made me cry! They had NO idea what they were doing, whereas I felt the opposite when I went here!

      • Ah then you might be able to help me! I need lots of layers, and NewYorkNY didn’t layer. NYNY must be great for blunt hair but no good for layers. Can you remember who you went to in CF?

        • Unfortunately not, I think I’ve blocked out the memory! When I first got there and sat down they got out an iPad and began showing me pictures of pixie cuts and I nearly ran straight back out again. Do you speak Thai? Because if not then I would avoid going anywhere out of Nimman!
